Dover NH Community Profile & History
Dover, New Hampshire is nestled between the scenic expanse of the Lakes Region, the snowy peaks of the White Mountains and the rugged shores of the Seacoast. Dover is also close to the University of New Hampshire, Pease International Tradeport and harbors a local airport. The city is a short drive from the Port of New Hampshire, the state's only deep water port, scene to industrial barges escorted by tugs importing and exporting goods to and from the Granite State. Dover offers a quick commute to the metropolitan area of Boston, and less than an hour's drive from Boston's Logan International Airport.
Originally inhabited by Abenaki Indians, Dover was settled by brothers William and Edward Hilton as "Hilton's Point" in 1623. Dover is believed to be the oldest permanent settlement in the state of New Hampshire and the seventh oldest in the United States. English Puritans purchased the settlement from the Hilton brothers in 1633, and colonial Governor George Burdett first bestowed the name "Dover" upon the community in 1637. The 34-foot Cochecho River provided abundant water power for early industry, and Dover prospered as a mill city for nearly 300 years. While most of the mills closed during the Great Depression of the 1930's, Dover enjoyed renewed prosperity after World War II, when the suburban housing boom brought hundereds of thousands of new residents to southern New Hampshire.
The quality of life in Dover is unmatched. The city boasts an exceptional school system, outstanding parks and recreation services, and premier medical facilities. The Cochecho River graces the banks of the downtown, a vivid reminder of the city's mill heritage. The developing waterfront and Cochecho Riverwalk are small examples of a cooperative spirit between public and private sectors.
Nowhere is this spirit more evident than in the close working relationship between the city's Office of Economic Development, the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce and the Dover School System. Dover's civic organizations share a common goal of creating, preserving and promoting a sound environment for existing and prospective businesses. The community is working to ensure future generations are up to the challenge of promoting economic prosperity and measured growth in Dover.
